Left high school at age 17 in 1942 – joined army Basic training in Dyersburg, TN and Guard Duty Left Boston on ship to England – missed D-Day by 2 weeks Met W. Churchill while in England – W.C. took up for American soldiers walking down street Shook hands w/ Roosevelt before ware in Chicago From England to France by boat and walked into Germany Slept outside in foxholes and elements – 0 degrees sometimes. For about 2 months Injured from a shell explosion and thrown about 12 feet. Kept fighting – injuries not know until after the war – spent time in the Moore Gen. Hosp. NC and recuperated in the Biltmoore House, NC |
